As we reported yesterday we now see a lot of spam messages with subject lines related to current events. Many of these spam messages contain links to sites that installs a trojan which makes your computer to a spam sending monster. The blog I got Spam? reports that the sites (for example a bogus Porntube which is the adult version of Youtube) is hosted on a number of hacked servers. When someone clicks on the link a pop-up is displayed, telling the user to install an Active-X control which installs the trojan that welcomes you to the Storm Worm botnet. This weekend this botnet was responsible for sending over 8 million spam messages in 24 hours.

F-secure also reports about these spam messages on their blog.

CBC News reports that the Quebec provincial police have dismantled a computer hacking network that targeted unprotected personal computers around the world. These so called botnets are commonly used to perform hacking attacks against other computers and servers. Botnets are also widely used as senders of millions and millions of spam messages. So will this arrest decrease the spam traffic? Read the rest of this entry »

The problem with VAT number validation for French VAT numbers are now fixed. All valid French VAT numbers should now be validated correctly.

Spammers often use clever tricks to disguise the actual link of the site they are trying to fool the recipient into visiting. The latest trick is to construct a Goggle search link which utilizes Google’s “I’m feeling luck” feature. Read the rest of this entry »

SpamDrain for domains has been released after a successful beta test period. Spam and viruses are blocked before they reach the domain’s original e-mail servers.

SpamDrain for domains provides domain level filtering for companies and individuals with their own domain and uses the same smart filtering as the current POP3 version. All e-mail is filtered before it reaches the domain’s original e-mail servers. This means that web mail and other services work as usual and no changes to the users’ e-mail program settings are required.

An e-mail message with “Räkningen” in the subject row is currently being spread, containing a compressed .exe file that is infected with a virus. The e-mail is written in Swedish and is being sent from Swedish senders, among others.

At SpamDrain we have discovered that some virus programs do not yet recognise the virus, which is why it is important to be particularly attentive. Norton Anti-virus does not pick it up, for example. On the other hand, F-Secure recognises it as Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Small.aso. SpamDrain now blocks this message before it reaches our members.

“We believe that attacks like this will become increasingly common in future, with viruses, phishing and spam mails being written in Swedish,” explains Henric Müller, CEO of Trillian AB. “Perpetrators are realising it’s easier to get through when they write in the recipient’s language. We’re focusing strongly on this by ensuring that SpamDrain’s AI engine learns new spam patterns more quickly.”

SpamDrain is launching a new department today, Security Centre. It reveals for example that approximately 70% of all e-mail being sent at the moment is spam.

Security Centre always contains the latest statistics from SpamDrain’s filtering engine.

Many people tried to guess how much spam SpamDrain had successfully blocked up until 31 May 2006, and we have finally arrived at the correct answer and named a winner. Read more on the competition page.

As from today, we can be found at Skårs Led 3 in Gothenburg. Our new premises, in the Business Center, provide us with a better environment and the potential to exchange experiences with other companies. See our information page for more information.

Nordea has once again been subjected to a phishing attack in poorly written Swedish. The aim was to try to steal one-off codes that are used when logging in and doing business in Nordea’s online banking service. As a SpamDrain user, you not only have first-class protection against attacks of this type, but also against spam and viruses.

Due to the poor quality Swedish and the incorrectly coded message (å, ä and ö were displayed incorrectly), it is unlikely that anybody took the bait this time.

Up until 31 May 2006, SpamDrain members can enter a competition to win a travel voucher worth SEK 5,000.

Starting 28 March, SpamDrain has a new graphic profile. The new, improved site has been developed in a collaboration between Trillian AB and the design agency Ourego.

Thanks to the new design and the new corporate colours, blue and green, the anti-spam service will in future be even more user-friendly and easier to understand.

“We were aware that the site needed a facelift, and above all we needed to find a design that would make it even easier for new members to get started with the service,” explains Henric Müller, CEO at Trillian AB. “The collaboration with Ourego worked excellently, they understood the needs we had and how the problems could best be dealt with.”

Another new feature is that all new members, including home users, can now try out the full version of SpamDrain Professional free of charge for 30 days immediately on registration. That way, everyone has the opportunity to experience complete e-mail protection from the beginning.

Trillian welcomes Randy

We would like to welcome Randy Shoai to Trillian and SpamDrain. Randy will work in marketing and sales of SpamDrain. Randy has extensive education and training behind him and we are convinced he will do a good job.

SpamDrain has now blocked more than 1 million spam messages, phishing attempts and e-mail viruses since its launch last year. These messages would otherwise have reached the inboxes of our members. Our members feel that the filtering works well, and that the few messages that are mistakenly blocked can easily be downloaded via the report e-mails or the archive. No important e-mails are lost, while an average of 99.95% of all spam is blocked.

There is now support for connecting to our servers with SSL (secure connection). SpamDrain can also be used to connect to providers that support SSL. In this way, an encrypted channel is assured all the way from the user to the final server. SSL support is available for all SpamDrain Professional users.

When 1.6 million Nordea customers were at risk of having their bank accounts emptied in the early hours of Tuesday, SpamDrain subscribers could rest assured.

“SpamDrain stopped the e-mail that asked Nordea’s customers to reveal their account codes via a false website. We’re very pleased that the filter has once again proved its effectiveness,” says Henric Müller, CEO of Trillian AB.

On Monday 13 June, we will be making updates that require us to shut down the service for a short while. There may therefore be some operational disruptions between the hours of 18.00 and 19.00 CET on this date. If everything goes as planned, the interruption will be no longer than a few minutes.

We are now launching a newer, fresher beta version of SpamDrain. In this new version, we have introduced a help system and improved the user friendliness of the entire site. The service is now open to everyone who wants to try it.

The objective of this version has been to make SpamDrain even easier to use. We have therefore introduced a help system, and further content will be added progressively. We have also introduced help bubbles which indicate what details to enter in the forms on the site.

We are now continuing to improve SpamDrain. The feedback we receive from you is important. We hope that you will continue to comment on how we can improve!

After more than a year of intensive development, we can now allow in the first real test users. They will download their e-mail via a powerful SpamDrain server that filters incoming e-mail of spam and viruses.

The aim of this test phase is to verify that different e-mail clients and e-mail servers work with SpamDrain. We also want to assure the accuracy of the filtering service.

In the near future, we anticipate being able to allow more users in. Until then, if you are not already a test user, please be patient!
